Corey Rockwell Literary and
Conservation Policy Development Award

INITIATIVE

This Scholarship offers an undergraduate minority student at an accredited college or university the opportunity to develop him/herself as an upland hunter, bird dog handler, conservationist, outdoor writer, and or other steward of the outdoors through a collaborative partnership with Minority Outdoor Alliance and the S. Kent Rockwell Foundation.

We will provide all necessary opportunities for a young, minority writer and aspiring conservationist to help establish a firm foundation and develop a platform of their own for the continued practice and study of conservation and outdoor stewardship.

  • We will provide $5,000 a year for 2 years (to total $10,000) to one male and one female student for additional costs and support for their collegiate expenses. We require the recipient to send monthly video updates showing the progress and development along with completing four creative writing and/or research projects as an exploratory study that is relevant and significant to the student’s cultural history outdoors for the fulfillment of the grant.

  • Description text goes hereStudent must be registered and enrolled with a minimum of 12 credit hours in classes prior to receiving the award. Please show proof of active enrollment.

    Student must have and maintain a cumulative 3.0 Grade Point Average from an accredited institution. Please include an unofficial transcript with your application.

    Student must continue to take at least 12 credit hours per semester.

    Student must be in good academic standing and maintain good academic standing with their academic institution during the duration of the program.

    Student must major in a degree program that is relevant to and beneficial to the study of Forestry and/or Land or Water Conservation.

    Student must submit a 1000 word written essay explaining why they would be a good fit for the program and what they intend to achieve with the opportunity for themselves. Additionally, how will the student cultivate inclusivity for a healthier outside with this opportunity?

    Please submit 3 letters of recommendation to this program from at least 2 academic references.

  • Student is required to fulfill the duties of an intern for the Minority Outdoor Alliance. These duties are outlined in the DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, & QUALIFICATIONS section of this document.

    Student will need to submit a written piece on a monthly basis for submission into their literary portfolio.

    Student must assist in the development of the Minority Outdoor Alliance Journal.

    At the end of the second school year, the student will be required to write a final 2500 word article with photos on an experience unique to them while operating under the program in order to submit to one of our partner organizations or outdoor publications.

    Student will be asked to be on as a featured guest of Our Outside Podcast to detail their experience periodically throughout the duration of the program.

    Student must attend the Minority Outdoor Alliance Festival and provide support during the duration of the event.

    The student can apply for travel funding if needed.

    Student must fulfill one year of the MOA Conservation Career Development Fellowship upon award of the scholarship. These duties are outlined below.

    Student must complete 1 interim report at the end of the Fall semester and a Final Report at the End of each Spring Semester.

Congratulations to Yannick Powder, our 2022 Corey Rockwell Bird Dog, Literary, & Conservation Development Award recipient for the Minority Outdoor Alliance! In partnership with the S. Kent Rockwell Foundation, we were able to award Yannick with $10,000 toward his development in bird dogs and the outdoor community.
